The Giant Puffball has been reported in sizes up to a couple of feet across, but usually it is not so large. It is still an impressive size, measuring a foot or more across, with many specimens 6-10" across.
Edible as long as the inside is white, before the spores begin to mature, it is enjoyed fried in butter, or cooked in soups and stews. It is so large that it makes more than a meal at a time.
I have heard this described as "a good tasting mushroom", and I have heard it described as having a flavor that just would not let a person keep it down. As with most mushrooms, there is a bit of variety in flavor depending on specific habitat and in preparation and individual tastes.
It is saprophytic, and grows on decaying mulch, either natural or intentional. It will form fairy rings - very LARGE fairy rings. Due to the large size of the mushroom, and its habit of flushing in groups, it requires a large mass of fungus to fruit, so it needs sufficient space to grow, either in a lawn, in woods or landscaping, or in a large container of compost.
We carry spawn for Calvatia Booniana, and Calvatia Gigantea in our Mushroom Store.
